The findings were that 80% neurologists perceive home rehabilitation to be a feasible option for their stroke patients. BENGALURU: A Bengaluru-based study by Nightingales Home Healthcare Services revealed that ratio of cases of strokes among male versus female is 2:1, showing that men are at a higher risk of getting a stroke. Stroke has now become more common in patients in their late 20s and 30s. Research was conducted across three cities: Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad.
The findings were that 80% neurologists perceive home rehabilitation to be a feasible option for their stroke patients. Physiotherapy (77%) is the most common therapy that they wanted in a home rehab programme. This shows that other services which are equally vital in complete patient rehabilitation like speech and language therapy or occupational therapy are not very well accepted by patients either due to lack of awareness or lack of availability.
About 77 per cent of neurologists felt that family members learn the exercises and treat patients without any therapists’ supervision which adds on to their existing challenge of accompanying patients’ for their appointments (65%). Dr. Akshata Rao (PT), Product Lead – Stroke Rehabilitation at Nightingales Home Health Services said, “Early comprehensive rehabilitation post stroke and compliance to prescribed rehabilitation program increases patients’ chances for a better recovery and of resuming their daily activities with minimal support."
