What is Complete Blood Count (CBC) Test?

The blood is made up of cells namely, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The CBC test measures if there is any increase or decrease in the blood cell counts. Red blood cells (RBCs) carry oxygen in the body and removes carbon dioxide. A complete blood count test measures two components of red blood cells which is hemoglobin (oxygen carrying protein) and hematocrit (percentage of red blood cells in body). White blood cells (WBCs) help the body fight against infection. WBCs are composed of five major types, neutrophils, lymphocytes, basophils, eosinophils, monocytes. Platelets help in blood clotting and control bleeding.

Why do you need to do CBC test?

A complete blood count test is a part of routine checkup. At times the doctor may order for a CBC test due to symptoms of bruising or bleeding. CBC test helps the doctor evaluate the overall health condition, monitoring a disorder, diagnosing a medical condition and monitoring effectiveness of given therapy. A wide range of disorders like leukemia, infections and anemia can be detected through a CBC test.

What parameters measured in Complete Blood Count (CBC)?

The complete blood count test measures the following parameters:

  • RBC count (Hemoglobin, Hematocrit)

  • WBC count (Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Basophils, Eosinophils, Monocytes)

  • Platelet count

  • Red blood cell indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC)
