What is Albumin Globulin Ratio Test?

Two major proteins are present in the blood: albumin and globulin. Both albumin and globulin are produced in the liver. Albumin helps to keep the blood from leaking out of the blood vessels whereas globulin transports iron to the blood and fights foreign infections. This test provides the information about total protein present in the blood. It also provides the data about the amount of albumin present compared to globulin. The comparison of albumin and globulin is called A/G ratio. The A/G ratio test is the part of total protein test.

Why do you need to do Albumin Globulin Ratio Test?

This A/G ratio test is a part of general health checkup. Hence, doctors recommend this test as part of a routine checkup. Doctors may recommend this test when they want to know whether the person is getting adequate nutrition, screen for liver, kidney or blood disease, check for the risk of an infection, etc. This test is done when doctors suspect liver disease and when the patient has symptoms including fatigue, itching, nausea and vomiting, lack of appetite, weight loss, spider-like blood vessels on the skin, yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice). The test result also helps to diagnose the nephrotic syndrome which causes puffiness around the eyes and in arms and legs.

What parameters measured in Albumin/Globulin Ratio?

Albumin globulin ratio test is done to measure the amount of albumin compared to globulin in the blood.
